Published Date: 25 August 2008
THE inaugural meeting of the Al Jolson Appreciation Club takes place at the Grey Horse Inn, Kirkgate, Wakefield, on Tuesday September 2 at 8pm.
The meeting is open to the public, everybody is welcome to come and hear some very rare recordings of Al Jolson that cannot be bought in any shop.
The evening will start with a "live" performance of Jolson songs, followed by the recordings, then a h
alf-hour of cabaret featuring songs of a later time, but staying within the format of the 20th century. However, there will be little or no rock 'n' roll or "rap".

The club will then meet on the first Tuesday of every month at the Grey Horse.
It is hoped that the club will provide interest of other music, besides that of Al Jolson.
We would like membership of everybody interested in the songs of yesterday; especially those of the first half of the 20th century.

Although the main theme will be Jolson, we will not shut our ears to the other great stars of that first 50 years or so, and there are many – from Judy Garland to Frank Sinatra, from Eddie Cantor to Bing Crosby.
Not forgetting the great British stars such as Al Bowley, Chick Henderson, Alma Cogan, Vera Lynn.

We hope to interest people in the great songs and ballads before the advent of "boy bands" and the crash-bang-wallop music so much in evidence today; to go back to a more gentle time.
