ON behalf of the trustees of the Dr Jackson Cancer Fund, I write to thank all those who came to the Urology Investigation Unit at Pontefract General Infirmary to help us hand over a flexible video cystoscope to the Mid Yorkshire Hospitals NHS Trust.
This £50,000 piece of equipment will not only produce extremely accurate and rapid diagnoses for bladder cancers etc but will, through the "video" element, be able to store digital images for future study, or for electronic "consultations" between do
ctors on a national or international basis.
In addition such equipment will be used in a role where the training of doctors, and particularly nurses, will be much easier than the systems currently available.
The equipment was presented to the NHS Trust by charity chairman Bill O'Brien. It was accepted by NHS Trust chairman John Harris.
Both said a few words and both acknowledged the support – a £20,000 donation – given to the project by Robin Maude, a property developer from Keighley, who is a patient of Philip Weston, a consultant urologist in the urology department at the local NHS Trust.
In addition, urology consultant Tony Browning explained the workings of this new state of the art piece of equipment and spoke on behalf of local patients to express their gratitude for such generosity both from Mr Maude, the Dr Jackson Cancer Fund and its supporters, many of whom were present at the hand over.
