Tribute to rugby legend

I HEARD with great regret of the death of Don Fox.
I recall Ron Bailey's book Don Fox – A Rugby League Legend. "Legend" means notable personality and Don certainly fits that bill.
Having first attended a rugby league match at Featherstone 76 years ago, I have attended most seasons until recently which, owing to ill health, I have been unable to. I was privileged to see Don play and grace Post Office Road with his great talents.
It is difficult to highlight the many games he controlled and brought victory and great pleasure to Rovers' fans, not least myself. I recall two of the great games he dominated.
One was the victory over Australia when he moved from the strange position (for him) of centre to his usual scrum half in the second half. He took on the Australians and brought about a victory that could not have been achieved without his efforts.
Whenever the history of Featherstone Rovers is written or talked about, this great game will feature.
I also remember a cup tie at Workington when a gale blew throughout and he tormented the Workington stars with excellent kicking and eventually tore the heart out of a good team and brought a Featherstone victory. Alex Murphy told me he was the best opponent he ever played against.
Don will always be remembered but throughout the rugby league world. I am proud to have known Don Fox as a friend and a great rugby league player.
