COLOURFUL tabards were created by children in the first of a series of workshops at Pontefract Castle.
The workshops are part of plans for a huge civic parade through the town on September 14 to celebrate its heritage.
Youngsters made heraldic tabards to wear during the parade, from Pontefract Park to the town centre, which will kick off a day of events for Pontefract Heritage Discovery Day, organised by Pontefract Groups Together with Pontefract Heritage Group.
At Pontefract Castle there will be a teddy bears’ picnic, while in the town centre a Victorian market, street entertainment, rides, brass band concerts and tours of St Giles’ and All Saints’ churches will be among the attractions on offer.
The parade leaves the park at 10.45am to arrive at 11am to open the event, part of the national civic trust heritage open days initiative.
There are two further free workshops, today and on Thursday August 21, between noon and 4pm. Today’s session is for children aged seven to ten making medieval weapons and next week for ages three to six making teddy bear crafts.
Children must be accompanied by an adult and refreshments are available. To book a place contact 01977 722744.
