New luxury dining experience coming to Wakefield – five star food and service at this Indian restaurant

From the personal greeting to the beautifully prepared and presented food, chandeliers to the classy cutlery, this new Indian restaurant in our city comes with an impressive heritage.

Having been a trendsetter in York with the original and renowned Mumbai Lounge, the man behind the concept has just opened a sister restaurant in the centre of Wakefield – and promises the same high-end quality to the food, ambiance and service.

High-class heritage

Over 22 years ago Rakib Ali and his family opened a restaurant in Fossgate, York, and received such rave reviews it sparked a change for the whole area, making it the go-to place for quality dining and wining.

“It’s been fantastic,” said Rakib, “The footfall that we created with our original restaurant has meant it is now one of the best streets in York for eating out.”

This is no ordinary Indian cuisine and top chef Rakib has cooked for celebrities including Dame Judy Dench, Robin Williams, Steve Martin and Billy Connolly, as well as snooker champions John Higgins and Steve Davis.

And now people in and around Wakefield will be able to take their love of a good curry to the next level now that Mumbai Wakefield has opened at Northgate, in the city centre.

Rakib brings his Bangladeshi heritage into play in the rich and varied menu at Mumbai Lounge, where mouth-watering dishes from the region sit alongside popular dishes from other parts of India. Using British products wherever possible, both spices and rice are specially imported for that authentic taste.

Rich and creamy sauces, delicately spiced tandoor delights, fabulous breads and rice cooked to perfection make the food a delight for the tastebuds, but presentation and service is also second-to-none.

Five star service

Just a couple of months ago Rakib, who alongside his family also owns similar restaurants in Goole and Hull, puts his success down to “unfailing attention to detail”.

From the moment you walk through the door, to being seated, placing your order, seeing the table settings and of course the food and drink, you can expect a five star service. Your greeting will be impeccable and the same goes for the service and our attention to detail. It’s what we do best and we want diners to enjoy their time here, being looked after. What we enjoy most is seeing the look on people’s faces when they see, and taste, the quality of our food.

Rakib

The 80-seater former Italian restaurant at 35-37 Northgate, has recently been refurbished with lavish amounts of money spent on a high-quality interior. As you go into the building you will be greeted, welcomed and shown to your table. With seating along either side and down the middle the dining room strikes a balance between space and a pleasantly busy ambiance.

From the ceiling chandeliers to the on-trend comfortable orange seating adorned with cushions every thought has gone into creating a top-quality experience throughout the whole restaurant. Carefully selected cutlery, crockery and glassware give a luxury feel to the whole dining experience.

Waiting staff are smartly dressed in uniform and wines are specially selected by UK wine importers Liquid Indulgence. The drinks menu has, like the food menu, plenty you may recognise and one or two lovely surprises.

Rakib said: “We offer a five star service, with a five star ambiance and five star food.”

And the customers of the sister restaurants certainly agree.

Reviews

We picked out some of the five star reviews on Google, as well as TripAdvisor:

Have been visiting Mumbai Lounge since 2010 and it gets better and better all the time. Our business dinner this week was a delight, with the owner Rakib personally selecting a range of dishes to suit our tastes. A VIP service comes naturally to him and you can see all the staff are highly trained and are at your service. This is not your average Indian. The menu evolves all the time and you can see the chefs (a lot of them) hard at work in an open kitchen. Perfect food. Perfect service. We will be back soon. Thanks Mr Rakib.
