STUART Dickens admits Featherstone may miss out on the play-offs following Sunday's defeat at Widnes but insists this season's experiences can only benefit next year's Grand Final push.
Rovers, who travel to Dewsbury on Sunday, are not mathematically out of the race for sixth but would need both the Vikings and Sheffield to slip up badly in their final two fixtures.
That would appear unlikely. Although one is guaranteed to drop poi
nts this weekend - Widnes travel to Sheffield tonight - the Eagles host relegated Dewsbury in their final fixture while the Vikings travel to Whitehaven.
Club captain Dickens said: "The target now for us is to win our last two games and see what the other results throw up but it's going to be very tough.
"We've still got things to play for - no player ever wants to lose a game - and possibly some are playing for their futures as well. Whether we make the play-offs or not, it's important to finish the season by putting a smile on our faces and those of the supporters - we can do that with a couple of wins.
"Over the last eight or ten weeks we've been playing all right. We let ourselves down against Sheffield and Batley, two winnable games, and threw a point away against Salford. It's been more a case of us losing games than teams beating us."
Stronger
Dickens says survival was the priority following Rovers' return to Co-Operative National League One - but admits it could have been so much better.
"At the beginning of the season we didn't know how many were going to get relegated or how many were going to be promoted. So our first target was always to survive. But it was always in the back of our minds that we were capable of making the play-offs, if we performed consistently every week.
"Possibly that lack of consistency is what could end up costing us a place in the top six. So while we're pleased to have survived, we might fall just short of our second goal.
"But I'm sure we'll be a better team for it next season. People don't realise the difference in intensity between the two divisions. Last season there were five or six times when we had a game wrapped up inside the first half-hour - in this division it does not happen.
"In the last couple of games we've been in front going into the last 20 and last year that would have been enough. But this year we've ended up getting beat. When you've played a year or two in that lower division you can get accustomed to that level, it takes a bit of time to adjust when you step back up.
"Next season we'll be stronger for it and hopefully a bit wiser as well. At Widnes at the weekend we were 20-18 up but probably looked from the touchline that we were ten points behind and chasing the game. We were forcing passes and making errors when we should have kept the game simple and ground out a result."
